Beginner's Guide

Choosing Your First Character

When you first launch Funguys Swarm, you will choose from the starting four characters: Ersa, Fuzzbug, X-olotl, and Chimpy. Each character comes with a default weapon and elemental affinity, and this choice shapes every run you attempt.

Ersa is a Water-element Funguy whose default weapon attacks apply Freeze to enemies. Her Freeze effect temporarily immobilizes enemies, giving you breathing room during overwhelming swarm moments. Ersa is the most beginner-friendly choice because her crowd control is passive and consistent, requiring no complex input sequences.

Fuzzbug summons orbiting Beast-aligned pixies that automatically attack nearby enemies. This means Fuzzbug deals damage even while you are focused entirely on dodging, making it forgiving for players who are still learning enemy patterns. As you unlock more skills, Fuzzbug scales into a strong Beast-damage build.

X-olotl creates clone copies of your character that mirror your weapon attacks. More clones means more damage output, but maintaining positioning to maximize clone coverage requires slightly more attention. X-olotl rewards players who understand weapon positioning.

Chimpy is an Earth-aligned character focused on retaliation damage. Enemies that attack Chimpy receive a counter-pulse that deals area damage. Chimpy thrives in dense swarm scenarios where many enemies are attacking simultaneously, turning the chaos against them.

Groovba, Dr. Botanika, Mr. Midnight, and Steve unlock as you progress through the game. Do not worry about unlocked characters in your first sessions — the starting four are fully capable of completing every arena.

Understanding Controls

Funguys Swarm supports both keyboard and mouse and full controller layouts. The game is Steam Deck Verified and plays excellently with a handheld controller setup.

Your character moves with WASD or the left analog stick. Weapon attacks fire automatically toward your mouse cursor or the direction you are facing on a controller. This means you can focus purely on positioning while your weapon handles damage output.

Dashing is triggered with Space or the controller’s jump button. Dashing makes you invulnerable to most enemy attacks during the dash frames. It is also the primary method for triggering dash-based skills, which many powerful builds rely on. You have a limited number of dash charges that recharge over time.

The game pauses automatically when you open the menu with Escape or the controller’s Options button. Use this to review your current upgrades, check the Sanctuary’s upgrade shop, or adjust settings.

How Arena Runs Work

Each arena begins with a wave announcement. Enemies spawn from screen edges in increasing numbers and variety. Your primary objective is to survive until the arena timer fills, at which point the arena boss spawns. Defeating the boss completes the arena and unlocks the next stage.

Enemies drop Experience (XP) crystals when defeated. Walk over these crystals to collect them and fill your XP bar. When you level up, the game pauses briefly and presents you with three upgrade cards. Choose the card that best fits your current strategy — you do not need to accept all upgrades immediately if the options do not suit your build.

Enemy difficulty scales as the run progresses. Early waves introduce basic minions like Fuzzbugs and Chompers. Mid-game waves add ranged attackers, elite variants, and environmental hazards like fire patches on Lava Jungle. Late-game waves are overwhelming swarms of elite enemies, and the arena boss is the final test of your build’s strength.

Skill Triggers: The Build Foundation

Understanding how skills activate is more important than picking the most powerful individual skills. Every skill in Funguys Swarm has a trigger type that determines when it activates:

Cooldown skills activate on a timer and are independent of player actions. They provide reliable passive effects but cannot be synchronized with other abilities.

Weapon attack skills activate whenever your weapon fires a projectile or swings. These are the most common trigger type and synergize with attack speed builds.

Dash skills activate the moment you spend a dash charge. Pairing multiple dash skills with a short dash cooldown creates near-constant ability uptime.

Movement skills activate as you move through the arena. They generate persistent effects around your character.

Pickup skills activate when you collect XP crystals. These turn normal progression into offensive pressure.

Level-up skills grant bonuses whenever you level up during a run.

The Best Builds Guide covers specific trigger-based build combinations in detail, but the core principle is simple: stack skills with matching triggers to amplify their combined effect.

The Forest Sanctuary

Between arena runs, you return to the Forest Sanctuary. This is your permanent base where upgrades persist across all runs. Spend Dew, Gold, and other currencies earned from arena completions on permanent weapon improvements, skill power upgrades, pet equipment, and Treeling unlocks.

The Shroom Shop inside the Sanctuary sells items including new weapons, additional skill slots, and rare relics. Check the shop after every completed arena — its inventory refreshes with each visit.

Starpath quests track specific challenges such as defeating a certain number of enemies with a particular element, completing arenas without taking damage, or collecting resources in specific ways. Completing Starpath quests unlocks new skills, characters, and cosmetic rewards.

Fire Curses: Risk and Reward

Fire Curses are optional difficulty modifiers introduced during the 1.0 update. When a level-up screen appears, one of your three card options may be a Fire Curse. Taking a Fire Curse makes the current run harder — enemies may gain extra health, move faster, or spawn in larger numbers — but it also increases your Dew and Starpath rewards for that run.

Experienced players commonly take Fire Curses intentionally to accelerate their progression, since the bonus rewards compound quickly. Beginners should skip Fire Curses and focus on completing arenas consistently first.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Trying to collect every XP crystal immediately is a mistake. Movement toward distant crystals often leads you into enemy clusters or boss attacks. Let your character naturally collect nearby XP while prioritizing dodging and positioning.

Ignoring dash is another frequent error. Dash frames grant invulnerability, making dash the single most important survival tool. Even slow characters can survive late-game waves if they dash intelligently.

Accepting every upgrade offered without strategy spreads your build too thin. A focused build with three highly synergistic skills will outperform a scattered build with six disconnected skills. Review the Skills and Weapons page to understand which upgrades genuinely strengthen your character.

Your First Arena Strategy

Carrot Farm is your starting arena. Its enemies are relatively slow and predictable, giving you space to experiment. Focus on survival rather than optimization. Learn the visual tells of each enemy type, practice dash timing against their attacks, and observe how your skill triggers activate during combat.

Watch the boss health bar at the top of the screen. When the arena timer fills, the boss spawns. Bosses in Carrot Farm have two distinct phases with different attack patterns. Stay mobile, prioritize dodging boss attacks over dealing damage, and use your dash to escape pincer combinations.

The Arena Walkthrough covers each arena in detail, including boss patterns and recommended strategies for Carrot Farm, Frozen Pond, Lava Jungle, Egglosseum, and the final Hellscape arena.

What Comes Next

Once you have completed a few Carrot Farm runs, you will have a feel for your preferred character and playstyle. From there, explore the Character Tier List to understand current community rankings, then move into the Best Builds Guide to find a trigger-based build that matches your chosen character. The Pets and Treelings page explains companion synergies that can dramatically improve your survivability in difficult arenas.

Every run teaches you something new about Funguys Swarm. The meta-progression systems ensure that even failed runs contribute to your permanent strength, so stay patient, experiment with different builds, and enjoy the chaotic charm of this cartoony survivor.

FAQ

よくある質問

Funguys Swarm に関するよくある疑問へのクイックアンサー。

How do I control my character in Funguys Swarm?

Movement uses WASD or the left analog stick on a controller. Your character attacks automatically with their equipped weapon. You can aim with the mouse or right stick. Press Space or the controller's jump button to dash, which is essential for dodging enemy attacks and triggering dash-based skills.

Should I pick a specific character as a beginner?

Ersa is generally recommended for beginners because her Freeze abilities provide strong crowd control from the start, making it easier to survive early enemy swarms. Fuzzbug is also newcomer-friendly due to its passive Beast pixie summons that deal consistent damage without active input.

What is the most important thing to focus on in early runs?

Survive. Do not worry about optimal builds in your first few runs. Focus on learning enemy attack patterns, understanding when to dash, and collecting as much XP as possible. Each run, even failed ones, contributes to your permanent Sanctuary upgrades through Forest Strength.

How does the upgrade system work?

When you level up during an arena run, you are offered three upgrade cards. These can be weapon upgrades (damage, attack speed, critical chance), skill upgrades (power, cooldown, area), or passive upgrades (permanent stat boosts). Some upgrades add entirely new projectiles or effects to your abilities, making build variety enormous.

What are Fire Curses?

Fire Curses are optional modifiers that increase difficulty in exchange for bonus rewards. Taking Fire Curse cards during level-ups makes enemies faster, tougher, or more numerous, but completing a run with those curses active grants extra Dew and Starpath progress. Advanced players commonly use curses to speed up progression.
