Understanding Shrines

Shrines are interactable objects scattered throughout every arena in Funguys Swarm. They first appeared in the January 2026 New Characters Update as a new gameplay mechanic, fundamentally changing how permanent upgrades and evolution items are obtained during runs.

The core Shrine interaction is simple: stand inside the Shrine’s radius for approximately five seconds without taking damage from enemies. The Shrine pulses, glows, and then delivers its reward. Leaving the radius before the timer completes cancels your progress entirely.

This waiting mechanic adds tactical depth to arena runs. Activating a Shrine means committing to a position for several seconds, which is dangerous in high-intensity combat. Skilled players learn to identify Shrine windows during enemy wave transitions or boss phases when positioning is more predictable.

Shrine Types

Funguy Shrines

Funguy Shrines are the most common type. They grant Evolution items that permanently enhance your character’s capabilities, including new projectile types, stat boosts, and special abilities. Before January 2026, Evolution items were granted automatically every five and ten minutes during runs. Shrines replaced this system, making Evolution item acquisition strategic rather than time-based.

The January 2026 update notes that Funguys Evolutions are now findable inside Funguy Shrines instead of appearing on a fixed schedule. This means actively seeking out Shrines during runs can accelerate your progression significantly compared to passively waiting for timed drops.

The Diamondcap relic, reworked in March 2026, now affects Shrines in addition to its existing effects. This makes Diamondcap particularly valuable for players prioritizing Shrine-based progression.

Armor Shrines

Armor Shrines are a specialized Shrine type introduced alongside the Armor mechanic in January 2026. These Shrines drop Armor pieces when activated.

Armor in Funguys Swarm operates on a one-to-one exchange basis: one hit from any enemy removes one Armor point. Unlike health, Armor does not regenerate between encounters. This makes Armor Shrines strategically important — each Armor piece you collect represents one free hit you can absorb during the run.

Armor Shrines appear less frequently than Funguy Shrines but provide defensive value that can be the difference between completing a difficult arena and failing near the end. Players attempting Hellscape with high Fire Curse multipliers should prioritize Armor Shrines when they appear.

The Protectron Treeling, reworked in March 2026, grants one Armor every fifteen, thirteen, or ten levels depending on upgrade rank. This creates synergy between Treeling choices and Shrine prioritization — if you are running Protectron,Armor Shrines become slightly less critical since your Treeling provides passive Armor gains.

Forest Strength Shrines

Forest Strength Shrines contribute to the meta-progression system introduced in version 1.0. Completing arenas grants Forest Strength points, but Forest Strength Shrines within arenas provide additional progress toward permanent upgrades.

The Forest Strength system is designed to address a core roguelite complaint: the feeling of being underpowered in early runs. Every arena you complete makes you permanently stronger through Forest Strength upgrades that carry forward to all future runs.

Shrine Locations by Arena

Carrot Farm

Carrot Farm has the lowest Shrine density of any arena. The relatively simple enemy composition and shorter run time mean fewer Shrine opportunities. When Shrines do appear here, they are usually Funguy Shrines offering basic Evolution items.

For beginners, Carrot Farm Shrines are safe to activate because enemy pressure is manageable. Use these runs to learn Shrine positioning and timing without the extreme risk of later arenas.

Frozen Pond

Frozen Pond introduces Armor Shrines more frequently than Carrot Farm. The slippery environment adds a slight positioning challenge, but Shrines in Frozen Pond are generally as safe to activate as those in Carrot Farm if you maintain awareness of sliding enemy movement.

The Pond’s layout includes several enclosed areas where Shrines tend to spawn. These areas provide brief protection from incoming projectiles during activation but can also trap you if a wave spawns inside the enclosure.

Lava Jungle

Lava Jungle marks a significant increase in Shrine difficulty. Environmental hazards — persistent fire pools and erupting volcanoes — can interrupt Shrine activation even when no enemies are nearby. A Lava Jungle Shrine activation requires monitoring both enemy positions and environmental timers.

Funguy Shrines in Lava Jungle often contain more valuable Evolution items than earlier arenas, reflecting the increased risk of obtaining them. Prioritize activation when the arena timer shows a wave transition approaching, as brief lulls in enemy spawns create windows for Shrine completion.

Egglosseum

The November 2025 Egglosseum update introduced this chicken-ring arena, which has the highest regular Shrine density of the four standard arenas. Elite-heavy compositions in Egglosseum make Shrine activation difficult but high-value.

Chicken Caesar’s arena layout is circular, which creates both advantages and challenges for Shrine activation. The open geometry means enemies can approach from any direction, but it also means fewer enclosed spaces where you can become trapped during activation.

Nutcase players find Egglosseum Shrines somewhat easier to activate due to the character’s dash-focused mobility. Nut N Run and Bramble Roots provide the repositioning tools needed to complete Shrine activations in this elite-heavy environment.

Hellscape

Hellscape has the highest Shrine density of any arena, but activation is extremely challenging. Fire pools persist throughout the arena, erupting volcanoes launch projectiles on timed intervals, and the Fire King’s combat phases create unpredictable positioning requirements.

The reward density in Hellscape Shrines is proportionally higher, reflecting the difficulty. Forest Strength Shrines in Hellscape provide substantial meta-progression progress, making them worthwhile targets for players with high Forest Strength levels and tested Fire King strategies.

The secret character unlock requires a Fire King clear in Hellscape. During these attempts, Shrine activation is a secondary concern — survival and boss performance take priority.

Shrine Timing Strategies

The five-second activation window is the central tactical challenge of Shrine mechanics. Several strategies improve your ability to complete Shrine activations:

Wave transitions are the safest Shrine activation windows. When one enemy wave completes and before the next begins, enemy density drops significantly for several seconds. Use these transitions to approach and activate nearby Shrines.

Boss phases in Funguys Swarm are often more predictable than regular wave compositions. When a boss enters a telegraphed attack animation, you can often find a safe position near a Shrine and complete activation during the attack’s recovery window.

Fuzzbug and pixie summons provide passive damage that continues while you stand in a Shrine. Your orbiting pixies will kill nearby enemies, maintaining the safe conditions needed for activation without requiring you to leave the Shrine radius to participate in combat.

Dr. Botanika’s Ube sentinel fires your weapon automatically while you stand in a Shrine. This makes her one of the best characters for Shrine activation because you deal damage to nearby enemies without moving from the Shrine position.

Diamondcap and Shrine Synergies

The March 2026 rework of Diamondcap extended its effect to apply to Shrines. Diamondcap now affects Shrine spawn chance in addition to its existing effects on Evolution item quality.

For players prioritizing Shrine-based progression, Diamondcap is a high-priority relic to acquire from the Shroom Shop. The extended effect makes it even more valuable, creating a direct incentive to seek out Diamondcap when shopping between runs.

Hellcap, another Shroom Shop relic, still applies Fire Curse tax by halving HP spawn chance instead of placing a timer on heart drops. This is relevant when an Armor Shrine activation is interrupted by a sudden heart spawn that you must collect to remain viable for continued combat.

Shrine Probability and Farming

Shrine spawns are pseudo-randomized within arena environments. There is no guaranteed Shrine spawn per wave — their distribution follows the same seeding logic as enemy spawns.

Players who want to maximize Shrine encounters should run longer sessions in higher-difficulty arenas where Shrine density is proportionally higher. Egglosseum and Hellscape provide more Shrine opportunities per run than Carrot Farm and Frozen Pond, though the activation difficulty scales with enemy density.

The Forest Strength system at Level 4 allows you to ban one card type from appearing during runs. If you find that a particular element consistently interferes with your ability to activate Shrines — for example, if Fire Curses are creating too much environmental chaos — banning the corresponding card type can improve build consistency and Shrine accessibility.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Funguys Swarm.

What are Shrines in Funguys Swarm?

Shrines are interactable objects found within arena environments. Standing within a Shrine's radius for a short duration grants a reward. The January 2026 update made Funguys Evolutions findable inside Funguy Shrines instead of receiving them on a fixed timer.

How do I activate a Shrine?

Move your character into the Shrine's radius and remain inside for approximately five seconds. Moving out of the radius before the timer completes cancels the progress. You cannot activate a Shrine while taking damage from enemies.

What types of Shrines exist?

There are three primary Shrine types: Funguy Shrines (which grant Evolution items and upgrades), Armor Shrines (which drop equippable Armor pieces), and Forest Strength Shrines (which contribute permanent progression).

Do Shrines appear in every arena?

Shrines appear in all five arenas. Their frequency and type distribution varies by arena. The Hellscape arena has the highest Shrine density but also the highest enemy density, making Shrine activation challenging.

Can I ban Shrines from appearing with Fire Curses?

No direct ban exists for Shrines. However, at Forest Strength Level 4, you can ban one card type from appearing, which can improve build consistency and make it easier to reach Shrines during difficult runs.
