Luck and Rarity Guide

The Luck System

Luck is a character stat introduced in the January 2026 New Characters Update alongside the skill rarity system. Every character has a base Luck value that can be increased through passive skills, relics, and character-specific mechanics.

The primary function of Luck is to influence the rarity tier of cards that appear during level-up screens. When you level up in an arena run, the game presents three card options. Each card has a rarity distribution weighted by your current Luck value. Higher Luck means higher average rarity among the presented options.

This creates a fundamental shift in how progression works. In the pre-January 2026 system, every player saw the same rarity distribution at level-up. With Luck, your build choices and character selections directly influence the quality of cards you receive, making Luck a strategic stat worth building around.

Understanding Rarity Tiers

The January 2026 update introduced four rarity tiers for skills and passives: Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. Each tier provides progressively stronger stat boosts for the same underlying skill effect.

Common skills provide baseline performance suitable for early-game progression. Rare skills offer approximately twenty to thirty percent improvement over Common versions. Epic skills provide forty to sixty percent improvements. Legendary skills deliver the maximum possible stat boost, sometimes exceeding Common versions by eighty to one hundred percent.

For example, the Green Heart passive at Common rarity might restore two health per tick. At Legendary rarity, the same passive might restore five or six health per tick. Over the course of a full arena run, the cumulative difference between Common and Legendary versions of frequently-triggered passives can be substantial.

Skill levels were also reworked in January 2026. Skills now max at level ten, with mutations available at levels five and ten. This creates two meaningful power spikes during runs — at the half-way point and at full upgrade completion.

Chance: Luck’s Companion Stat

Chance works alongside Luck but affects different gameplay events. While Luck determines card rarity at level-up, Chance influences the probability of beneficial events occurring during combat.

Chance-affected events include bonus Dew drops from enemies, surprise skill triggers that activate without a specific input, extra pickup spawns, and favorable card appearance events that deviate from standard spawn logic. The precise list of Chance-affected events is not fully documented and represents an area where community testing continues to expand understanding.

The combination of high Luck and high Chance creates what players describe as a consistency engine. Luck ensures your card options are strong on average, while Chance ensures beneficial events occur frequently during combat. Together, they make runs feel more predictable and controlled.

Characters and Luck

Steve

Steve is the primary Luck-focused character in Funguys Swarm. His passive mechanic grants five percent to both Luck and Chance for each Water Card in his deck. With ten Water Cards — a realistic mid-game deck size — Steve gains plus fifty percent to both stats.

This passive makes Steve the most consistent character for high-rarity card access. Every Water Card Steve collects during a run simultaneously builds his element synergy and increases his stat distribution quality. The result is a character whose power curve is both predictable and powerful.

Steve’s Water automation also interacts well with Lucky Cards, the Fire Blessing introduced in January 2026. Lucky Cards specifically increase Rare card appearance frequency. Combined with Steve’s base Luck amplification, Lucky Cards on Steve can make Epic rarity cards appear regularly at level-up screens.

Dr. Botanika

Dr. Botanika does not have innate Luck scaling but benefits from Luck-affected card rarity because her Sky-element focus makes Cooldown Reduction cards highly valuable. High Luck increases the probability that Cooldown Reduction appears at Rare or Epic rarity during level-ups, which directly improves Ube’s Shock pulse frequency.

Mr. Midnight

Mr. Midnight’s Night-element focus does not directly involve Luck, but the character’s XP stacking mechanic benefits from Chance-affected bonus drops. Higher Chance increases the frequency of bonus Dew and pickup spawns, which feeds Ube’s magnet and accelerates stack accumulation.

Building Around Luck

Creating a Luck-focused build requires selecting characters and skills that amplify the stat while maintaining combat effectiveness.

Water-element skills are the natural foundation for Luck builds because Water cards directly contribute to Steve’s passive and provide Freeze crowd control for survivability. Prioritize Water cards that offer stat bonuses or cooldown improvements alongside their Freeze utility.

The Lucky Cards Fire Blessing is particularly valuable in Luck-focused runs. Taking Lucky Cards during a level-up when offered adds Rare card appearance frequency to your existing Luck bonus, creating a compounding effect that significantly improves average card quality.

Relics that increase Luck or Chance include Diamondcap (which affects card appearance indirectly through Shrine interactions) and several Shroom Shop items that provide stat bonuses. Checking the Shroom Shop after each arena completion is essential for players building around Luck.

Rarity and Fire Curses

Fire Curses introduce variance into the rarity system. While Luck increases average card rarity, Fire Curses do not directly modify rarity distributions. However, the additional difficulty from Fire Curses means that high-rarity cards from a high-Luck build become more valuable — they compensate for the increased challenge.

The interaction between Fire Blessings and Luck is worth noting. Lucky Cards directly improves rarity appearance, while Treasure Hunter (another Fire Blessing) increases resource pickup bonuses. Forest Power provides critical hit chance that scales with total damage output. A high-Luck build taking multiple Fire Blessings alongside Fire Curses can create a risk-reward profile that remains manageable while delivering exceptional card quality.

Optimal Luck Values

There is no documented maximum Luck cap in Funguys Swarm. Community testing suggests diminishing returns at extremely high values, where the marginal improvement in rarity probability per additional Luck point decreases.

For practical purposes, most players find Luck values between one hundred and two hundred percent to be highly effective. Steve with ten Water Cards reaches two hundred and fifty percent Luck and Chance combined, which represents the current practical ceiling for Luck-focused builds.

Values beyond this range are theoretically possible through additional Water Card collection and relic stacking, but the marginal benefit becomes difficult to measure in actual gameplay scenarios where run length and consistency matter more than theoretical maximum card quality.

Luck and the March 2026 Update

The March 2026 Optimization Update changed chest drops to always contain cards of Rare minimum rarity. This change means that even players without Luck-focused builds now receive Rare-quality cards from chests, partially reducing the advantage of high-Luck builds in terms of card acquisition.

However, Luck still influences the rarity of level-up card options and affects Chance-based beneficial events during combat. The chest change narrows the gap between low-Luck and high-Luck builds for equipment quality but does not eliminate Luck’s strategic value entirely.

The Banish rework from March 2026 also affects Luck builds. Because Banish no longer immediately ends your level-up, you can banish multiple undesirable cards before selecting your upgrade. For high-Luck builds, this means you can use Banish to remove low-rarity options while preserving high-rarity choices, effectively amplifying your Luck bonus.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Funguys Swarm.

What does Luck do in Funguys Swarm?

Luck increases the probability of receiving higher-rarity skills and passives during level-up screens. The higher your Luck stat, the more likely you are to see Rare, Epic, or Legendary card options instead of Common ones.

How is Luck different from Chance?

Luck specifically affects card rarity at level-up. Chance affects the probability of beneficial events triggering during gameplay, such as bonus Dew drops, surprise skill activations, or extra pickup spawns. Both stats together create a powerful consistency engine.

Which character benefits most from Luck?

Steve benefits most directly from Luck because his passive grants five percent to both Luck and Chance per Water Card collected. With ten Water Cards, Steve has plus fifty percent to both stats, making his card options consistently high-rarity.

What is the skill and passive rarity system?

The January 2026 update introduced random rarity for skills and passives at each level-up. Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary versions of the same skill exist. Higher rarity provides greater stat boosts. E.g., Legendary Green Heart gives more healing than Common Green Heart.

How does Luck interact with Fire Blessings?

The Lucky Cards Fire Blessing specifically increases the chance for Rare cards to appear more often. Combined with a high Luck stat, Lucky Cards can make Epic rarity a common occurrence at level-up screens.
